Early childhood experiences. Children who experience abuse, neglect or other traumatic events may be at increased risk for developing depression as adults.
Chronic medical conditions. Conditions such as cancer, stroke, chronic pain or heart disease can lead to depression.
Medications. Some drugs used to treat other conditions can cause symptoms of depression. For example, beta-blockers used to treat high blood pressure can sometimes cause depressed moods.
Substance abuse . Alcoholism and drug abuse can both lead to and worsen depression symptoms .
Grief . Losing a loved one can trigger major depressive episodes .
Financial problems or job loss . These stressful life events can lead to depressive episodes .

Suicidal ideation is when a person has thoughts about suicide. This can range from thinking about suicide to making a plan to commit suicide. If you are having thoughts about suicide, it is important to get help from a mental health professional.

What are the warning signs of suicidal ideation?

There are many warning signs of suicidal ideation, but some of the most common include talking about wanting to die or hurt oneself, expressing feelings of hopelessness, talking about being a burden to others, increasing alcohol or drug abuse, withdrawing from friends and activities, abnormal mood swings, and giving away prized possessions. If you are experiencing any of these warning signs, it is important to reach out for help.

What are the risk factors for suicidal ideation?

Risk factors for suicidal ideation include:

-A history of suicide attempts
-A family history of suicide
-A history of mental illness, such as depression, bipolar disorder, or schizophrenia
-A history of substance abuse
-A recent loss, such as the death of a loved one, the loss of a job, or the end of a relationship
-Feelings of hopelessness, worthlessness, or helplessness
-Isolation from friends and family
-Access to firearms or other lethal means
